Wet Macular Degeneration Treatments
People with this condition might have trouble seeing clearly or reading. While it cannot be cured, several treatments are available, like Eylea, a drug used to treat wet age-related macular degeneration (AMD).
Eylea
Eylea is an injection that works by blocking a protein in the eye called VEGF (vascular endothelial growth factor). This protein can cause abnormal blood vessels to grow in the retina, leading to vision problems. By blocking VEGF, Eylea helps reduce swelling and prevent further damage to the eye. Most patients receive Eylea injections once every four to eight weeks, depending on their doctor’s advice.
Other Treatment Options
Here are a few other treatment options that doctors may consider for managing wet macular degeneration:
1. Lucentis
Lucentis, similar to Eylea, is an injection that targets VEGF to reduce swelling in the retina and control abnormal blood vessel growth. Patients often need Lucentis injections once a month, though some may require less frequent doses after the initial treatment period. Lucentis has helped many patients maintain or improve their vision.
2. Avastin
While Avastin was originally developed to treat cancer, it has also been found helpful for wet macular degeneration. Like Eylea and Lucentis, Avastin blocks the VEGF protein to reduce abnormal blood vessel growth. It is usually injected into the eye once a month. Since Avastin is typically less expensive than some other treatments, it’s sometimes chosen for patients looking for a cost-effective option.
3. Photodynamic Therapy (PDT)
Photodynamic therapy, or PDT, involves two steps: first, a doctor injects a special light-sensitive drug into the bloodstream. Then, they use a laser to activate the drug once it reaches the eye. This activated drug helps destroy the abnormal blood vessels in the retina without harming surrounding healthy tissue. PDT is typically used in combination with other treatments, as it’s usually not as effective on its own.
4. Laser Surgery
Laser surgery is an older treatment option that uses a high-energy laser to destroy abnormal blood vessels in the eye. While it’s less commonly used today, some patients still receive this treatment, especially when other options aren’t suitable. Laser surgery may help slow down vision loss, but it’s not always the best option for everyone, as it can sometimes damage surrounding healthy tissue.
5. Vabysmo
Vabysmo is a newer treatment option that also targets VEGF, like Eylea and Lucentis. Vabysmo may allow patients to go longer between injections, making it a more convenient choice for some. Patients usually start with more frequent injections and gradually reduce the frequency based on how well they respond to treatment.
How to Protect Your Vision
Treating wet macular degeneration early is important. Regular eye checkups and prompt treatment can help slow down vision loss and improve the quality of life for people with this condition. Talk with an eye doctor to determine which treatment option is best for you or your loved one.
